German verb conjugation in the present tense: endings, sein, haben and vowel changes.

Every German sentence needs a conjugated verb, and in the present tense there are only six endings to learn. This guide gives you those endings, the spelling adjustments, the verbs that change their vowel (du sprichst, er fährt), and the irregular verbs you will use every day: sein, haben, werden and wissen. Like Hindi हूँ, है, हो, हैं, the verb changes with the person.

In 30 seconds

  • Remove -en to get the stem, then add: -e, -st, -t, -en, -t, -en.
  • ich lerne, du lernst, er lernt, wir lernen, ihr lernt, sie lernen
  • Some verbs change their vowel, but only for du and er/sie/es: fahren → du fährst.
  • One present tense covers both English "I learn" and "I am learning".
  • subject
  • verb

The six endings

Almost every German infinitive ends in -en (lernen, wohnen, kommen). Remove it to find the stem (lern-) and add the ending for the person:

Regular verbs: lernen and wohnen
PersonEndinglernenwohnen
ich-elernewohne
du-stlernstwohnst
er / sie / es-tlerntwohnt
wir-enlernenwohnen
ihr-tlerntwohnt
sie / Sie-enlernenwohnen

Two shortcuts: the wir, sie and Sie forms are always the same as the infinitive (except for sein), and er and ihr share the ending -t.

  • Ich wohne in Pune.
  • Priya arbeitet als Ingenieurin.
  • Woher kommen Sie?

Spelling adjustments

  • arbeiten → du arbeitest, er arbeitet, ihr arbeitetStem ends in -t or -d (also finden, warten, antworten): add an e so you can pronounce it.
  • heißen → du heißtStem ends in -s, -ß, -z (also tanzen, reisen): du takes only -t.
  • sammeln → ich sammle, wir sammelnInfinitive in -eln or -ern: wir and sie take only -n.

Verbs that change their vowel

Many common irregular verbs change the stem vowel, but only in the du and er/sie/es forms. The endings stay regular.

Stem-vowel changes (du and er only)
ChangeVerbsExample
e → isprechen, geben, essen, helfen, nehmen*du sprichst, er spricht
e → ielesen, sehen, empfehlendu liest, er sieht
a → äfahren, schlafen, tragen, waschendu fährst, er schläft
au → äulaufendu läufst, er läuft

* nehmen also changes its consonants: du nimmst, er nimmt. The vowel change never appears with ich, wir or ihr: ich fahre, ihr fahrt. Learn these verbs with their er-form: fahren, fährt.

sein, haben, werden, wissen

Four verbs to learn by heart

ichbinhabewerdeweiß
dubisthastwirstweißt
er/sie/esisthatwirdweiß
wirsindhabenwerdenwissen
ihrseidhabtwerdetwisst
sie/Siesindhabenwerdenwissen

wissen (to know a fact) behaves like the modal verbs: no ending for ich and er. For the uses of werden, see the future tense guide. Separable verbs split in the present: Ich stehe um sechs auf. (see the separable verbs guide).

What the present tense covers

German has no separate "-ing" form. The present tense does the work of several English and Hindi tenses:

  • Ich lerne Deutsch.I learn German / I am learning German.
  • Ich fliege morgen nach Berlin. The future, with a time word.
  • Ich wohne seit drei Jahren hier."I have been living here for three years": with seit, German uses the present. See the time clauses guide.

Hindi हूँ, है, हो, हैं

The verb follows the person in both languages
HindiGerman
मैं छात्र हूँ।Ich bin Student.
वह इंजीनियर है।Er ist Ingenieur.
तुम कहाँ रहते हो?Wo wohnst du?
हम जर्मन सीख रहे हैं।Wir lernen Deutsch.

Hindi speakers already expect the verb to change with the person: हूँ → bin, है → ist, हैं → sind. Two differences make German easier: the verb does not change for gender (रहता / रहती are both wohnt), and सीखता हूँ and सीख रहा हूँ are both lerne.

Common mistakes

  1. Not Ich bin lerne Deutsch. But Ich lerne Deutsch. No "am + -ing": one verb is enough.
  2. Not Er fahrt nach Köln.But Er fährt nach Köln.fahren changes a → ä for er.
  3. Not Ich spreche, du sprechstBut du sprichste → i in the du-form.
  4. Not Ihr fährt zusammen. But Ihr fahrt zusammen. No vowel change for ihr.
  5. Not Du arbeitst viel.But Du arbeitest viel.Stem in -t: add e.
  6. Not Er weißt es nicht. But Er weiß es nicht.wissen: no ending for er.
