The German future tense (Futur I): werden + infinitive, and when you don't need it.

German has a future tense, ich werde arbeiten, but it uses it far less than English or Hindi. Most plans are said in the present: Morgen fliege ich nach Berlin. This guide shows how Futur I is built, the jobs it still does, the three meanings of werden, and the trap that catches English speakers: ich will does not mean "I will".

In 30 seconds

  • Futur I = werden (position 2) + infinitive (end): Ich werde dich anrufen.
  • For simple plans, Germans prefer the present + a time word: Ich rufe dich morgen an.
  • Use Futur I for predictions, promises, firm intentions and guesses: Er wird wohl im Stau stehen.
  • ich will = I want. "I will" = ich werde.
  • subject
  • verb
  • time

How Futur I is built

Conjugate werden in position 2 and put the infinitive at the end of the clause. werden is irregular in the du and er/sie/es forms:

werden in the present + infinitive
PersonwerdenExample
ichwerdeIch werde dich anrufen.
duwirstDu wirst das schaffen.
er / sie / eswirdEs wird regnen.
wirwerdenWir werden umziehen.
ihrwerdetIhr werdet staunen.
sie / SiewerdenSie werden bald Bescheid bekommen.

The infinitive never changes. Separable verbs stay joined at the end: Der Zug wird um 9 Uhr ankommen.

The present for the future

When a time word already makes the future clear, everyday German uses the present tense:

  • Ich fliege nächste Woche nach Frankfurt.I'm flying / I will fly to Frankfurt next week.
  • Wir treffen uns morgen um sechs. We're meeting tomorrow at six.
  • Im Sommer mache ich die B1-Prüfung.

Futur I in these sentences is not wrong, but it sounds heavier and more formal than needed.

When Futur I is the right choice

  • Morgen wird es regnen.Predictions, like weather forecasts.
  • Ich werde dir helfen, versprochen.Promises.
  • Ab jetzt werde ich jeden Tag Deutsch lernen.Firm intentions and resolutions.
  • Er ist nicht da. Er wird wohl im Stau stehen.A guess about now, usually with wohl or sicher: "He's probably stuck in traffic."
  • Du wirst jetzt schlafen gehen!A firm instruction, for example from a parent.

Three meanings of werden

What follows werden decides the meaning
werden +MeaningExample
noun or adjectivebecomeSie wird Ärztin. Es wird kalt.
infinitivefutureSie wird morgen arbeiten.
past participlepassiveDas Haus wird gebaut.

For the passive, see the passive guide. The form würde (ich würde gern …) also comes from werden: it is Konjunktiv II, for wishes and polite requests.

The ich will trap

wollen is a modal verb meaning "to want". Ich will nach Deutschland. means "I want to go to Germany", not "I will". For the future, use werden or the present. See the modal verbs guide.

Word order with modals and in dass-clauses

In a subordinate clause, werden goes to the very end, after the infinitive (see the dass guide):

  • Ich glaube, dass es morgen regnen wird.

With a modal verb, two infinitives stand at the end, the modal last: Ich werde am Samstag arbeiten müssen. (I'll have to work on Saturday.) This is B1 level and mostly written.

Hindi -गा, -गी, -गे

Future in both languages
HindiEveryday German
मैं कल दिल्ली जाऊँगा।Ich fahre morgen nach Delhi.
कल बारिश होगी।Morgen wird es regnen.
वह ट्रैफ़िक में फँसा होगा।Er wird wohl im Stau stehen.

Hindi marks almost every future action on the verb (जाऊँगा), so Hindi speakers tend to overuse Futur I. Translate plans with a time word into the German present. The last row is a nice match: Hindi फँसा होगा is also a guess about now, exactly like wird … stehen.

A note on Futur II

Futur II says something will be finished by a point in the future: Bis Montag werde ich den Bericht geschrieben haben. It is rare in speech; the Perfekt usually does the job: Bis Montag habe ich den Bericht geschrieben.

Common mistakes

  1. Not Ich will morgen kommen. (meaning "I will")But Ich komme morgen. / Ich werde morgen kommen.wollen means "want".
  2. Not Ich werde morgen arbeite. But Ich werde morgen arbeiten. The second verb stays in the infinitive.
  3. Not Du werdest das schaffen. But Du wirst das schaffen.Irregular: du wirst, er wird.
  4. Not Ich werde fliegen nach Berlin. But Ich werde nach Berlin fliegen. The infinitive goes to the end.
  5. Not Er sagt, dass er wird kommen. But Er sagt, dass er kommen wird.In a dass-clause, werden goes last.
  6. Not Sie wird Lehrerin werden sein. But Sie wird Lehrerin. / Sie wird Lehrerin werden."Become" is werden on its own.
