dass in German: the verb at the end, and das or dass?

Ich glaube, dass … Ich hoffe, dass … Es ist wichtig, dass … These are among the most useful sentence starters in German, and they all follow one rule. This guide covers that rule, the classic spelling question das or dass, and when you can leave dass out. Hindi's कि works almost the same way.

In 30 seconds

  • dass = "that", joining a statement to a verb like sagen, glauben, wissen, hoffen.
  • The conjugated verb goes to the end: Ich weiß, dass du müde bist.
  • Always a comma before dass.
  • das (one s) is an article or pronoun; if you can replace it with dieses or welches, write das. Otherwise, dass.
  • subject
  • verb

The rule: verb to the end

dass starts a subordinate clause. The subject comes right after dass, and the conjugated verb moves to the very end (see the word order guide):

  • Er kommt morgen.Main clause: verb second.
  • Ich weiß, dass er morgen kommt.dass-clause: verb last.
  • Sie sagt, dass der Kurs sehr gut ist.

Useful dass starters

Phrases that are often followed by dass
TypeExamples
Saying, thinkingsagen, glauben, denken, meinen, finden, wissen, hoffen
FeelingsIch freue mich, dass … · Es tut mir leid, dass … · Schade, dass …
es ist + adjectiveEs ist wichtig / klar / möglich / gut, dass …
Opinion (Goethe B1)Ich bin der Meinung, dass … · Ich finde es gut, dass …

The opinion phrases are useful in the B1 speaking and writing exams (see the B1 Schreiben guide).

Two verbs, Perfekt, separable verbs

Only the conjugated verb goes last. Any infinitive or participle stands just before it:

  • Ich hoffe, dass ich bald in Deutschland arbeiten kann.Modal verb last.
  • Er sagt, dass er die Prüfung bestanden hat.Perfekt: the helper verb last.
  • Ich glaube, dass der Zug um acht ankommt.A separable verb joins up again at the end.

Starting with the dass-clause

A dass-clause can open the sentence. Then the main clause starts with its verb: Dass du gekommen bist, freut mich sehr. This is less common and sounds more formal; most of the time the main clause comes first.

Leaving dass out

After verbs of saying and thinking (sagen, glauben, denken, meinen, hoffen), you can drop dass. Then the second part has normal word order:

  • Ich glaube, dass er morgen kommt.
  • Ich glaube, er kommt morgen.Same meaning, verb second. Very common in speech.

You cannot mix the two: with dass, verb last; without it, verb second.

das or dass?

Even native speakers mix them up in writing. das (one s) is an article (das Buch), a pronoun (Das ist gut.) or a relative pronoun (das Buch, das ich lese; see the relative clauses guide). dass (double s) only joins clauses.

The replacement test
SentenceReplace with dieses / welches?Write
Das Kind spielt.Yes: Dieses Kind spielt.das
Das Auto, das dort steht, …Yes: …, welches dort stehtdas
Ich weiß, dass du recht hast.Nodass

A second clue: dass almost always follows a verb or a phrase like es ist wichtig; the relative das follows a neuter noun.

Hindi कि

The same structure in both languages
HindiGerman
मुझे लगता है कि वह कल आएगा।Ich glaube, dass er morgen kommt.
मुझे पता है कि तुम थके हुए हो।Ich weiß, dass du müde bist.
यह ज़रूरी है कि हम समय पर पहुँचें।Es ist wichtig, dass wir pünktlich ankommen.

कि sits in exactly the same place as dass, and after it Hindi also puts the verb at the end (… कल आएगा). If you follow your Hindi instinct for the second half, the German word order comes out right.
