Konjunktiv II — würde, hätte, wäre and polite German, made clear.

The Konjunktiv II is how German talks about the unreal: wishes, "if" situations, polite requests and advice. You need it from A2 onward, and the B1 and B2 exams expect it. Most of it comes down to one helper verb, würde, plus a handful of short forms. Hindi has its own version, which makes the logic familiar.

In 30 seconds

  • Most verbs: würde + infinitive at the end: Ich würde gern nach Berlin fahren.
  • Common verbs have short forms: wäre, hätte, könnte, müsste, sollte, dürfte, möchte.
  • Uses: polite requests (Könnten Sie …?), wishes, unreal conditions (Wenn ich Zeit hätte, …) and advice (Du solltest …).
  • Past: hätte or wäre + participle: Wenn ich das gewusst hätte, …
  • subject
  • verb parts
  • time
  • place

The idea, through Hindi

Hindi marks unreal situations with its own verb forms: अगर मेरे पास समय होता, तो मैं आता। ("If I had time, I would come", but you don't, so you won't). German does the same with the Konjunktiv II:

  • Wenn ich Zeit hätte, würde ich kommen.अगर मेरे पास समय होता, तो मैं आता।

The Hindi होता … आता and the German hätte … würde kommen both signal: this is imagined, not real.

The forms

würde and the most common short forms
Personwerden → würdehaben → hättesein → wärekönnen → könnte
ichwürdehättewärekönnte
duwürdesthättestwärstkönntest
er/sie/eswürdehättewärekönnte
wirwürdenhättenwärenkönnten
ihrwürdethättetwärtkönntet
sie/Siewürdenhättenwärenkönnten

The other modal verbs follow könnte: müsste, dürfte, möchte. sollte and wollte have no umlaut and look like the past tense; context tells you which is meant. For most other verbs, use würde + infinitive: ich würde kaufen, ich würde fahren.

The four uses at a glance
UseGermanHindi
Polite requestKönnten Sie mir helfen?क्या आप मेरी मदद कर सकेंगे?
WishIch wäre gern in Goa.काश मैं गोवा में होता।
Unreal conditionWenn ich Zeit hätte, würde ich kommen.अगर मेरे पास समय होता, तो मैं आता।
AdviceDu solltest früher schlafen.तुम्हें जल्दी सोना चाहिए।

Polite requests

In German, politeness lives in the verb form more than in extra words:

  • Könnten Sie mir bitte helfen?Could you help me, please? — softer than Können Sie …?
  • Ich hätte gern einen Kaffee.I'd like a coffee.
  • Würden Sie das bitte wiederholen?Would you repeat that, please?

Where Hindi adds ज़रा, कृपया or जी, German switches to the Konjunktiv II. That is the habit to build for emails and the speaking exam.

Wishes

  • Ich wäre jetzt gern am Strand.I'd love to be at the beach now.
  • Wenn ich doch mehr Zeit hätte! If only I had more time!

Unreal conditions with wenn

The wenn-clause sends its verb to the end. If it comes first, the main clause starts with its verb, so two verbs meet at the comma (see the word order guide):

  • Wenn ich reich wäre, würde ich ein Haus in Goa kaufen. If I were rich, I would buy a house in Goa.
  • Ich würde mehr reisen, wenn ich nicht so viel arbeiten müsste.I would travel more if I didn't have to work so much.

Compare a real condition, which uses the normal present: Wenn ich morgen Zeit habe, komme ich. (I might well have time.)

Advice and suggestions

  • Du solltest mehr Wasser trinken.You should drink more water. — like Hindi तुम्हें ज़्यादा पानी पीना चाहिए
  • An deiner Stelle würde ich früher anfangen. In your place I would start earlier.
  • Wir könnten am Samstag ins Kino gehen. We could go to the cinema on Saturday.

The past: hätte/wäre + participle

For something that did not happen in the past, use hätte or wäre (the same choice as in the Perfekt) + the participle:

  • Wenn ich das gewusst hätte, wäre ich früher gekommen.If I had known that, I would have come earlier. — अगर मुझे पता होता, तो मैं पहले आ जाता।

Common mistakes

  1. Not Wenn ich würde Zeit haben, …But Wenn ich Zeit hätte, …Use hätte and wäre directly; and in the wenn-clause the verb goes last.
  2. Not Wenn ich reich wäre, ich würde reisen. But Wenn ich reich wäre, würde ich reisen. After a wenn-clause, the main clause starts with the verb.
  3. Not Kannst du mir bitte bitte helfen? (to a stranger)But Könnten Sie mir bitte helfen?Politeness comes from Sie and the Konjunktiv II, not from repeating bitte.
  4. Not Ich würde gern einen Tee haben. (correct, but clumsy)But Ich hätte gern einen Tee.With haben and sein, the short forms sound natural.
  5. Not Wenn ich das gewusst habe, wäre ich gekommen. But Wenn ich das gewusst hätte, wäre ich gekommen. Both clauses need the Konjunktiv II in the past.

Klarweg's A2 course builds the Konjunktiv II in three steps: Chapter 22 (könnte), Chapter 23 (sollte) and Chapter 32 (wishes and politeness). B1 Chapter 3 uses it for polite requests, and B2 Chapters 31–33 add the past and als ob. New to German? Start with the A1 course; Chapter 1 is free.
