als, wenn or wann? Three German words for "when", made clear.

English has one word for "when". German has three, and choosing the wrong one is one of the most common A2 and B1 mistakes. The rule fits in one line once you ask the right question: is it a question, one moment in the past, or anything else? Hindi speakers already know half of this from जब, जब भी and कब.

In 30 seconds

  • wann: a question about time: Wann kommst du?
  • als: one event or one period in the past: Als ich ein Kind war, …
  • wenn: everything else: repeated past events, present, future, and "if".
  • als and wenn send the verb to the end, and so does wann inside a sentence (Ich weiß nicht, wann er kommt.).
  • question word
  • verb
  • time

The decision in three questions

  1. Is it a question about time (direct or indirect)? → wann
  2. Is it one event or one period, and in the past? → als
  3. Anything else? → wenn
Which "when" to use
SituationWordExample
QuestionwannWann beginnt der Kurs?
Past, oncealsAls ich in Berlin ankam, regnete es.
Past, repeatedwennImmer wenn ich Oma besuchte, backte sie Kuchen.
PresentwennWenn ich müde bin, trinke ich Tee.
FuturewennWenn ich in Deutschland bin, rufe ich dich an.
ConditionwennWenn es regnet, bleiben wir zu Hause.

als: once, in the past

Use als for a single moment (als ich ankam) or a single stretch of time that is over (als ich ein Kind war, als ich in Pune wohnte). The stretch can be years long; what matters is that it happened once.

  • Als ich ein Kind war, wohnte ich in Jaipur. When I was a child, I lived in Jaipur.
  • Als der Zug ankam, war es schon dunkel. When the train arrived, it was already dark.
  • Als wir uns 2019 kennengelernt haben, war ich Student. In speech, the Perfekt is common too.

In writing, als-clauses usually take the Präteritum, especially with sein, haben and modal verbs.

wenn: repeated, present, future, if

wenn covers every other "when", plus "if".

  • (Immer) wenn ich nach Hause kam, war das Essen fertig.Repeated in the past: every time I came home. immer or jedes Mal makes it clearer.
  • Wenn ich Zeit habe, lese ich.Present, whenever it happens.
  • Wenn du in München bist, besuch mich!Future, a single event: still wenn, because it is not past.
  • Wenn ich mehr Geld hätte, würde ich reisen. An unreal condition with Konjunktiv II.

The third example shows why "once vs repeated" is not the whole rule: a single future event still takes wenn. als is only for the past.

wann: the question word

wann asks "at what time?". It is used in direct questions and in indirect ones after Weißt du, …, Ich frage mich, … and similar. It never means "whenever" or "if".

  • Wann fährt der Bus?Direct question: verb second.
  • Weißt du, wann der Bus fährt?Indirect question: verb at the end. See the question words guide.

Test: if you can replace "when" with "at what time", you need wann.

Word order

als, wenn and indirect wann start a subordinate clause, so the conjugated verb goes to the end. If that clause comes first, the main clause begins with its verb (see the word order guide):

  • Ich trinke Tee, wenn ich müde bin.
  • Wenn ich müde bin, trinke ich Tee.Verb, comma, verb.

Hindi जब, जब भी, अगर, कब

The same split in both languages
HindiGerman
तुम कब आओगे?Wann kommst du?
जब मैं बच्चा था, …Als ich ein Kind war, …
जब भी मैं थका होता हूँ, …Immer wenn ich müde bin, …
अगर बारिश हुई, …Wenn es regnet, …

कब is always wann. Hindi जब covers both als and wenn, so it cannot decide for you: ask whether the event is past and happened once. अगर (if) is always wenn (or falls).

The other als: comparisons

als also means "than" after a comparative: Berlin ist größer als München. This als does not start a clause and does not move the verb. See the comparatives guide.

Common mistakes

  1. Not Wenn ich gestern nach Hause kam, …But Als ich gestern nach Hause kam, …One event in the past: als.
  2. Not Als ich nächstes Jahr in Berlin bin, …But Wenn ich nächstes Jahr in Berlin bin, …als is only for the past.
  3. Not Ich weiß nicht, wenn der Kurs beginnt. But Ich weiß nicht, wann der Kurs beginnt."At what time": an indirect question needs wann.
  4. Not Immer als ich sie besuchte, …But Immer wenn ich sie besuchte, …Repeated past events take wenn.
  5. Not Als ich ein Kind war, ich spielte Cricket. But Als ich ein Kind war, spielte ich Cricket. After the clause, the main verb comes first.
  6. Not Wenn ich habe Zeit, …But Wenn ich Zeit habe, …Inside the wenn-clause, the verb goes last.
