Comparative and superlative in German — größer, am größten, made clear.

Comparing things is one of the first things you want to do in a new language: bigger, cheaper, the best. German builds comparatives much like English, with a few umlauts and irregular forms to learn. Hindi compares in a completely different way, which is exactly why it helps to see the two side by side.

In 30 seconds

  • Comparative: add -er: schnell → schneller. Superlative: am -sten: am schnellsten.
  • Many short adjectives add an umlaut: alt → älter → am ältesten.
  • Learn the irregular ones: gut → besser → am besten, viel → mehr → am meisten, gern → lieber → am liebsten.
  • Compare with als (than) or so … wie (as … as).

How Hindi compares, and how German does

Hindi keeps the adjective unchanged and puts से after the thing being compared: राम श्याम से लंबा है। German changes the adjective and uses als:

  • Ram ist größer als Shyam.राम श्याम से लंबा है।
  • Ram ist am größten.राम सबसे लंबा है। — सबसे ≈ am …-sten

So the Hindi habit to drop is "base adjective + से". In German the adjective itself has to change: groß → größer.

Regular forms and umlauts

Positive → comparative → superlative
TypePositiveComparativeSuperlative
Regularschnellschnelleram schnellsten
Regularbilligbilligeram billigsten
With umlautaltälteram ältesten
With umlautjungjüngeram jüngsten
With umlautwarmwärmeram wärmsten
Extra -e-heißheißeram heißesten

Common adjectives that take an umlaut: alt, arm, groß, jung, kalt, kurz, lang, stark, warm. Adjectives ending in -t, -d, -s, -ß, -z add -e- in the superlative to be pronounceable: am kürzesten, am ältesten.

gern → lieber → am liebsten is how you talk about preferences: Ich trinke gern Tee, lieber Kaffee und am liebsten Chai.

als or wie?

  • Mumbai ist größer als Pune.Different: comparative + als.
  • Pune ist nicht so groß wie Mumbai.Equal or not equal: so + base form + wie.
  • Mein Bruder ist genauso alt wie ich.exactly as old as

In casual speech you may hear größer wie, but it is considered wrong in writing and in exams.

Before a noun

Comparatives and superlatives before a noun take normal adjective endings (see the adjective endings guide), and the superlative uses an article instead of am:

  • Ich suche eine billigere Wohnung.a cheaper flat
  • Das ist der schnellste Zug.the fastest train
  • Wir wohnen in der größten Stadt Indiens.in the biggest city in India

immer größer, je … desto

  • Die Mieten werden immer höher.Rents keep getting higher.
  • Je mehr ich übe, desto besser spreche ich.The more I practise, the better I speak. (B1: verb last after je, verb first after desto + comparative.)

Common mistakes

  1. Not Ram ist groß als Shyam. But Ram ist größer als Shyam. The Hindi pattern (base adjective + से) does not carry over; the adjective must change.
  2. Not gut, guter, am gutestenBut gut, besser, am bestenIrregular.
  3. Not mehr schnellBut schnellerGerman does not form comparatives with mehr + adjective.
  4. Not Er ist so groß als ich.But Er ist so groß wie ich.Equality: so … wie.
  5. Not Dieser Zug ist schnellste. But Dieser Zug ist am schnellsten. / Das ist der schnellste Zug.After sein without a noun: am …-sten; before a noun: article + ending.
