Goethe B1 exam: pattern, modules and how to prepare

B1 is the level most Indian learners aim for when Germany becomes a real plan: it is the standard for an Ausbildung visa and a common requirement from employers. This guide explains the four modules exactly as the Goethe-Institut runs them, what each task asks of you, and how to prepare without wasting months.

Checked against the Goethe-Institut's B1 exam regulations (version of 1 September 2025) and its official adult practice set · Last checked 5 November 2026

Goethe-Zertifikat B1 for adults
ModuleTimePartsFormat
Lesen65 min5Written, in a group
Hören≈ 40 min4Written, in a group
Schreiben60 min3Written, in a group
Sprechen≈ 15 min3Usually in pairs, after 15 minutes' preparation; about 10 minutes if held individually

Every module is marked out of 100 points, and a module counts as passed with 60 points (60%). Because the modules are independent, a strong reading score cannot rescue a weak speaking score, and the other way round. You need four separate passes for the full certificate. If you fail one module, you can book that module again rather than the whole exam (how module retakes work).

Lesen: reading (65 minutes)

The official practice set suggests a working time for each part. Keeping to it is the single best reading strategy, because part 2 takes twice as long as the others.

PartTimeTextTask
110 minA personal blog post or emailRichtig / Falsch
220 minTwo press articlesa, b or c
310 minAds and short noticesMatch ads to people's situations; one situation has no matching ad (answer 0)
415 minReaders' comments on a questionIs each person for the idea? Ja / Nein
510 minRules or instructions, such as house rulesa, b or c

Part 4 is where many candidates lose points. People rarely say "I am for it". They say Ich finde das gar nicht schlecht, aber … or Natürlich ist das praktisch, trotzdem …. Read to the end of each comment: the word after aber or trotzdem usually carries the real opinion.

Hören: listening (about 40 minutes)

You get time to read the tasks before each part. Use it to underline the key word in each statement, so you know what you are listening for. Parts 2 and 3 are heard only once, so train with audio you cannot replay.

Schreiben: writing (60 minutes)

Three tasks, with a recommended working time for each:

TaskTimeTextLength
120 minInformal email to a friend, covering three points (describe, give a reason, suggest something)≈ 80 words
225 minYour opinion on a topic, in reply to a comment in an online discussion≈ 80 words
315 minPolite, formal email, for example to a course leader or a landlord≈ 40 words

The examiners check task completion first: did you write something about every point? Then coherence, vocabulary and structures. A short, clear sentence for each point beats one impressive paragraph that misses a point.

Task 3 example

You have signed up for a course, but you cannot attend the first session. Write to the course leader, Herr Weber. Apologise politely and explain why you cannot come.

Model answer (about 40 words)

Sehr geehrter Herr Weber,
leider kann ich am Montag nicht am ersten Kurstermin teilnehmen, weil ich an diesem Tag eine wichtige Prüfung an der Universität habe. Das tut mir sehr leid. Könnten Sie mir bitte die Unterlagen per E-Mail schicken?
Mit freundlichen Grüßen
Arjun Mehta

Dear Mr Weber, unfortunately I cannot attend the first session on Monday, because I have an important exam at university that day. I am very sorry. Could you please send me the materials by email? Kind regards, Arjun Mehta

Notice the register: Sehr geehrter Herr … and Mit freundlichen Grüßen for a formal email, Liebe/Lieber … and Viele Grüße for a friend. Notice too that weil sends the verb to the end: … weil ich eine Prüfung habe. For task 2, a reliable shape is: your opinion, one reason with an example, a counter-argument, your conclusion. The B1 Schreiben guide has more phrases for each task.

Sprechen: speaking (about 15 minutes, in pairs)

You and a partner prepare separately for 15 minutes and may make notes. Then:

Part 1: plan something together (about 3 minutes)

For example, you have won a one-week language course for two in Cologne and must plan the trip: when, how to travel, where to stay, what to take. Make suggestions, react to your partner's ideas and reach a decision together.

Wie wäre es, wenn wir mit dem Zug fahren? · Das ist eine gute Idee, aber … · Dann machen wir es so.

Part 2: present a topic (about 3 minutes)

You choose one of two topics and present it along five slides that the task gives you:

  1. Introduce the topic and the structure of your talk.
  2. Your personal experience.
  3. The situation in your home country, with examples.
  4. Advantages and disadvantages, and your opinion.
  5. Close and thank your listeners.

Slide 3 is a gift for Indian candidates, because examiners want concrete examples. The official practice set's topic "Wedding: a big celebration or a private party?" practically invites you to talk about a wedding in India:

Model for slide 3

In Indien sind Hochzeiten oft sehr groß. Bei der Hochzeit meiner Cousine waren über 400 Gäste da, und das Fest hat drei Tage gedauert. In den Städten feiern aber immer mehr Paare kleiner, weil eine große Hochzeit sehr teuer ist.

In India, weddings are often very big. At my cousin's wedding there were over 400 guests, and the celebration lasted three days. In the cities, though, more and more couples celebrate on a smaller scale, because a big wedding is very expensive.

Part 3: talk about the topics (about 2 minutes)

After each presentation, the partner and an examiner give brief feedback and ask a question; the presenter answers. Prepare one sentence of feedback (Mir hat gut gefallen, dass …) and one question for your partner while they speak. The B1 Sprechen guide has more partner practice.

The grammar B1 really tests

B1 does not reward rare structures. It rewards connected sentences that are correct enough to follow. These carry the most weight:

Mistakes Hindi speakers make at B1

  1. Not …, weil ich habe keine Zeit. But …, weil ich keine Zeit habe. Good news: a German subordinate clause ends with the verb, just like a Hindi sentence (क्योंकि मेरे पास समय नहीं है). Trust that instinct here, and only here: main clauses still need the verb second.
  2. Not Ich bin hier seit drei Jahren gewohnt. But Ich wohne seit drei Jahren hier. For something that is still true, German uses the present tense with seit, much like Hindi मैं तीन साल से यहाँ रहता हूँ.
  3. Writing a polished speech for part 2 and reading it out. Examiners mark interaction and fluency. Use notes with keywords, not full sentences.
  4. Answering only two of three points in a writing task because the third seemed obvious. Every point is checked separately.
  5. Using du in the formal email of task 3. Formal emails use Sie, Ihnen, Ihr, all capitalised.

Official practice material and word list

A twelve-week plan (after A2)

The Goethe-Institut's rough guideline is about 350–650 teaching units of 45 minutes to complete B1, counted from the beginning. If you have finished A2, a focused final stretch could look like this:

WeeksFocusWhat to do
1–2DiagnosisOne untimed practice set. Mark it with the key. Note your weakest module honestly.
3–6Grammar for connected speechSubordinate clauses, past tenses, Konjunktiv II. One 80-word text every second day, corrected.
7–9Module practiceReading parts to the clock; listening with no replay; a five-slide presentation every week on a new topic.
10–11Full rehearsalsOne complete timed exam a week. Speaking practice with a partner, part 1 and part 3 included.
12ConsolidateRework your mistake list. Confirm the exam schedule, centre and ID requirements.

Questions

Do I need all four modules for an Ausbildung visa?

Authorities and employers usually expect a full B1 certificate covering all four skills. Check what your training provider and the German mission ask for. If you pass modules on different dates, ask your exam centre how the results are documented before you rely on them.

Should I take all modules on one day?

If your level is even across skills, yes: one booking, one trip. If one skill is clearly weaker, some candidates take the strong modules first and the weak one later, after more practice. Both are allowed.

Is there a digital version?

Some centres run the exam on computers. See paper-based vs digital Goethe exams.

Is B1 enough to study at a German university?

Usually not for a degree taught in German, which normally needs C1-level proof. B1 is often the entry level for a Studienkolleg. See German certificates for studying in Germany.
