Goethe exam fees in India and how to register
What a Goethe-Zertifikat costs at the Goethe-Institut / Max Mueller Bhavan in India, how booking works, which rules about cancellations and module bookings matter, and what to check before you pay.
In 30 seconds
- You book directly with a Goethe-Institut / Max Mueller Bhavan or an authorised exam centre, usually online, and pay the full fee when you register.
- Listed fees in November 2026: A1 ₹9,400, A2 ₹10,600, B1 ₹18,800 (₹4,700 per module), B2 ₹21,200 (₹5,300 per module).
- From B1 upwards you can book single modules. A1 and A2 are booked as a whole exam.
- Treat the fee as non-refundable unless your centre's terms say otherwise. Prepare first, then book.
Fees by level
| Exam | Full exam | Single module | Guide |
|---|---|---|---|
| A1: Start Deutsch 1 | ₹9,400 | Not modular | A1 exam guide |
| A2 | ₹10,600 | Not modular | A2 exam guide |
| B1 | ₹18,800 | ₹4,700 | B1 exam guide |
| B2 | ₹21,200 | ₹5,300 | B2 exam guide |
| C1, C2 | See your exam centre's page | C1 · C2 | |
For B1 and B2, the full-exam fee is exactly four times the module fee, so taking modules separately does not cost more in fees, only in travel and time. Fees can differ between centres and change during the year; the price shown when you register is the one that counts.
Where you can take the exam
In India the Goethe-Institut works under the name Max Mueller Bhavan, with institutes in New Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Bengaluru and Pune. Goethe-Zentren and exam partners in other cities, for example Hyderabad, Chandigarh, Coimbatore, Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram, also hold exams. Not every exam runs in every city on every date, so search by level first, then by city.
Some centres also offer a digital version, taken on the centre's laptops with a German keyboard. See paper-based vs digital exams.
How registration works
- Open the Goethe-Institut India exam page for your level (A1, A2, B1) and filter by city and format.
- Note the registration opening date: dates are often listed before booking opens.
- Register online with your details exactly as they appear on your passport or ID. The certificate is issued in that name.
- Pay the full fee during registration. Only candidates who have paid in full can sit the exam.
- Keep the confirmation. It tells you the time, place and what to bring.
Some centres handle questions or particular bookings by email; the contact is on each city's page. If you need accommodations for a disability or medical condition, ask when you register; a medical certificate is normally required.
Rules that cost money
- Refunds: at least one Indian centre states that exam fees are non-refundable. Read your centre's terms before paying.
- Illness: the Goethe-Institut India FAQ describes rescheduling after illness for an administration fee of 25% of the original exam fee. Expect to need a medical certificate.
- Lost certificate: a replacement was listed at ₹2,900, and is available only for exams taken within the last ten years.
- Failing one module (B1–C2): you can rebook only that module and pay only that module's fee (module retakes explained).
On exam day
- Bring the photo ID named in your confirmation. The name must match your registration.
- Arrive at the time on the confirmation, not the start time of the first module.
- Dictionaries are not allowed, and phones must be switched off and put away.
- In the written modules only the answer sheet is marked, so transfer every answer.
Are you ready to book?
Because the fee is substantial and usually not refundable, book when your practice results are already above the pass mark, not when you hope they will be. A simple rule:
Do one official practice set under exam conditions and mark it with the answer key. If you score clearly above 60% in every part, book. If not, spend the next few weeks on your weakest part and test again.
Practice sets and task explanations are in the A1 and B1 exam guides. Klarweg's level courses include Goethe-style mini tests at every level, so you can check your readiness before you pay an exam fee.
Prepare before you pay the fee
An A1 exam costs more than the whole Klarweg A1 course. Prepare properly once, and sit the exam once. Klarweg's courses are self-paced, colour-coded and Hindi-supported, with Goethe-style practice at every level. Chapter 1 of each level is free.
- A1 ₹1,999
- B1 ₹3,999
- Lifetime A1–C2 ₹4,999
- 7-day refund
