Prepare for the Goethe B2 Exam: Format, Practice and Study Plan
The Goethe-Zertifikat B2 certifies advanced independent language use. You should be able to understand the main ideas of complex texts on concrete and abstract topics, interact with fluency and spontaneity, and express clear, detailed views on a range of subjects, including explaining advantages and disadvantages.
The written modules total approximately 180 minutes: Lesen 65, Hören about 40 and Schreiben 75. Speaking is usually a 15-minute pair exam, with 15 minutes of preparation. Modules can be taken individually or in combination.
Official format: The module descriptions and durations above follow Goethe-Institut information. The study schedule below is a Klarweg preparation suggestion, not an official Goethe timetable.
1. What each section tests
| Section | What you do | Practise this |
|---|---|---|
| Lesen | Read short articles, emails, advertisements and public notices. | Identify main information, details, viewpoints, opinions and rules in varied texts. |
| Hören | Understand conversations, radio announcements, telephone messages and public announcements. | Understand key messages and important details in interviews, talks, conversations and radio. |
| Schreiben | Write a forum post expressing and justifying your opinion, plus a formal message in a professional context. | Cover every task point, choose an appropriate greeting, use clear sentences and check word order. |
| Sprechen | Give a short presentation on a given topic, respond to your partner and exchange arguments in a discussion. | Give complete answers, ask follow-up questions and make practical suggestions. |
2. Speaking: practise useful conversation moves
Ask for information: use question words and polite requests to keep the conversation moving.
Wann beginnt der Film? — When does the film start?
Wie viel kostet die Fahrkarte? — How much does the ticket cost?
Können wir uns um sechs Uhr treffen? — Can we meet at six o’clock?
Talk about your everyday life: prepare flexible points about work or studies, family, free time, home, shopping, travel and routines. Avoid memorising one long speech that may not fit the question.
Plan something together: suggest an option, respond to your partner and reach an agreement.
Wollen wir am Samstag lernen? — Shall we study on Saturday?
Gern. Um wie viel Uhr? — Gladly. At what time?
Passt dir zehn Uhr? — Does ten o’clock work for you?
3. Writing: a dependable checklist
- Underline the points the task asks you to include.
- Use a suitable greeting and closing for the recipient.
- Write one clear sentence for each point before adding extra detail.
- Check verb position: Am Samstag besuche ich meine Freundin. — On Saturday, I’m visiting my friend.
- Check articles, adjective endings you have learned, noun capitalisation, spelling and punctuation.
- Leave time to reread the message and confirm that every point is answered.
4. Common mistakes Hindi speakers can avoid
- Translating word-for-word: learn German sentence patterns as chunks.
- Forgetting verb position: Heute fahre ich mit dem Bus. — Today I’m going by bus.
- Learning nouns without articles: learn der Termin — die Termine, not only Termin.
- Using only memorised answers: practise adapting your answer to the exact question.
- Missing task details: in reading, listening and writing, check the full prompt—not just familiar words.
5. A practical 4-week preparation plan
| Week | Focus | Practice |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Build the base | Review B2 vocabulary and core grammar; read short everyday texts and listen daily. |
| 2 | Train each module | Practise Lesen and Hören tasks; write short messages; speak aloud on familiar topics. |
| 3 | Timed practice | Complete module practice under time limits; review every error and rewrite weak answers. |
| 4 | Exam rehearsal | Complete official sample material, practise speaking with a partner and revise recurring mistakes. |
Adjust this plan to your current level and available study time. Goethe-Institut provides free sample and practice material to help you become familiar with the exam task types.
6. Before exam day
- Know the format and time limit of each module.
- Practise with official sample papers—not only textbook exercises.
- For speaking, practise responding naturally with another person.
- Confirm the exam centre’s arrival time, identification requirements and current instructions.
