- Many verbs take one fixed preposition, and that preposition takes one fixed case: warten auf + Akkusativ.
- Learn them as a unit: verb + preposition + case, with one example sentence.
- Questions: Worauf wartest du? (thing) · Auf wen wartest du? (person).
- Short answers: Ich warte darauf. (thing) · Ich warte auf ihn. (person).
- preposition
- Akkusativ
- Dativ
- question word
How these verbs work
With these verbs, the preposition has lost its normal meaning. auf in warten auf has nothing to do with "on top of". The case is fixed as well: even an, auf and über, which switch between Akkusativ and Dativ for places (see the prepositions guide), keep one case here. With auf and über it is almost always Akkusativ.
- Ich warte auf den Bus.I'm waiting for the bus.
- Sie nimmt an dem Kurs teil. She is taking part in the course. (an dem is usually shortened to am.)
Verbs with an Akkusativ preposition
| Verb | Meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|
| warten auf | wait for | Ich warte auf deine Antwort. |
| denken an | think of | Ich denke oft an meine Familie. |
| sich erinnern an | remember | Erinnerst du dich an den Termin? |
| sich interessieren für | be interested in | Er interessiert sich für Politik. |
| sich kümmern um | take care of | Sie kümmert sich um die Kinder. |
| sprechen über | talk about | Wir sprechen über das Projekt. |
| sich ärgern über | be annoyed about | Ich ärgere mich über den Stau. |
| sich gewöhnen an | get used to | Ich gewöhne mich an das Wetter. |
| bitten um | ask for | Er bittet um Hilfe. |
| sich bewerben um | apply for | Ich bewerbe mich um die Stelle. |
Verbs with a Dativ preposition
| Verb | Meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Angst haben vor | be afraid of | Sie hat Angst vor der Prüfung. |
| teilnehmen an | take part in | Ich nehme an dem Workshop teil. |
| sprechen mit | talk to | Ich spreche mit meinem Chef. |
| träumen von | dream of | Er träumt von einem Haus. |
| fragen nach | ask about | Sie fragt nach dem Weg. |
| abhängen von | depend on | Das hängt von dem Wetter ab. |
| sich verabreden mit | arrange to meet | Ich verabrede mich mit Freunden. |
| gehören zu | belong to, be part of | Das gehört zu meinen Aufgaben. |
Some verbs take two: sich bedanken bei jemandem für etwas (thank someone for something), sich entschuldigen bei … für … (apologise to someone for something). And sich bewerben takes um for the job but bei for the company: Ich bewerbe mich bei Siemens um eine Stelle.
sich freuen auf or über?
A classic exam point. Both take Akkusativ, but the meaning differs by time:
- Ich freue mich auf den Urlaub.Something in the future: I'm looking forward to the holiday.
- Ich freue mich über das Geschenk.Something that has happened or is here now: I'm happy about the present.
The formal letter ending Ich freue mich auf Ihre Antwort. uses auf because the answer is still to come.
Asking: worauf or auf wen?
For things, join wo and the preposition. Add an r if the preposition starts with a vowel. For people, keep the preposition and add wen (Akkusativ) or wem (Dativ).
| Verb | Thing | Person |
|---|---|---|
| warten auf | Worauf wartest du? | Auf wen wartest du? |
| denken an | Woran denkst du? | An wen denkst du? |
| fragen nach | Wonach fragt er? | Nach wem fragt er? |
| träumen von | Wovon träumst du? | Von wem träumst du? |
In casual speech you will hear Auf was wartest du?, but in writing and exams use worauf. More question words are in the question words guide.
Answering: darauf, daran, davon
To avoid repeating a thing, use da + preposition (again with r before a vowel). For a person, use the preposition + pronoun.
- Wartest du auf den Bus? — Ja, ich warte darauf.
- Wartest du auf Ravi? — Ja, ich warte auf ihn.
- Hast du Angst vor der Prüfung? — Nein, ich habe keine Angst davor.
The da-word can also point forward to a whole clause: Ich freue mich darauf, dich zu sehen. Ich denke daran, dass morgen Feiertag ist. See the zu + infinitive guide.
Hindi has fixed partners too
| Hindi | German |
|---|---|
| मैं बस का इंतज़ार कर रहा हूँ। | Ich warte auf den Bus. |
| उसे परीक्षा से डर लगता है। | Sie hat Angst vor der Prüfung. |
| हम प्रोजेक्ट के बारे में बात कर रहे हैं। | Wir sprechen über das Projekt. |
Just as इंतज़ार always takes का and डरना takes से, each German verb has its partner. Translating word by word from English or Hindi does not work: से becomes vor here, and "for" becomes auf. Learn each pair with one sentence.
