How much does it cost to learn German in India?
The honest answer has three parts: what you pay to learn, what you pay for the exam, and the hours you put in. This guide shows each part with real numbers where they exist, and explains which format is worth paying for at which stage.
In 30 seconds
- Learning: costs vary widely by format: self-paced online, live online classes, classroom institutes or a private tutor.
- Exam: Goethe exam fees in India were listed at ₹9,400 for A1 and ₹18,800 for B1. For many learners the exams cost more than the course.
- Time: the Goethe-Institut's rough guideline is 80–200 teaching units of 45 minutes for A1, and 350–650 for B1, counted from the beginning.
- The cheapest path is the one you finish without repeating a level or an exam.
Learning formats compared
Prices for courses differ by city, provider and schedule, so instead of quoting other providers' fees, here is what each format gives you and where it falls short.
| Format | Strengths | Limits |
|---|---|---|
| Self-paced online course | Lowest cost per level; study at any hour; repeat explanations as often as you need | No live speaking partner; needs self-discipline |
| Live online group class | Fixed schedule and a teacher; speaking practice with classmates | Pace set by the group; fixed times can clash with work |
| Classroom institute | Structured, social, often linked to an exam centre | Travel time; only in larger cities; usually the highest cost per level |
| Private tutor | Full attention, flexible focus, ideal for speaking and exam rehearsal | Cost per hour adds up quickly over a whole level |
Many learners combine them: a structured self-paced course for grammar, vocabulary and listening, plus a few sessions of live speaking practice before the exam. That gives you the volume of practice cheaply and the human feedback where it matters most.

Exam fees
If you need a certificate for a visa, a job or an Ausbildung, budget for the exam from the start. Goethe-Institut / Max Mueller Bhavan India listed these fees in November 2026:
| Exam | Full exam | Single module |
|---|---|---|
| Goethe-Zertifikat A1 | ₹9,400 | Not modular |
| Goethe-Zertifikat A2 | ₹10,600 | Not modular |
| Goethe-Zertifikat B1 | ₹18,800 | ₹4,700 |
| Goethe-Zertifikat B2 | ₹21,200 | ₹5,300 |
Failing and retaking an exam is the most expensive mistake in this whole budget. Details, booking steps and refund rules: Goethe exam fees and registration in India.
The time cost
Time is the cost people underestimate. The Goethe-Institut gives a rough guideline for the total guided instruction needed to complete each level, counted in 45-minute teaching units from the beginning:
| Level | Teaching units (45 min) | Roughly, in hours |
|---|---|---|
| A1 | 80–200 | 60–150 |
| A2 | 200–350 | 150–260 |
| B1 | 350–650 | 260–490 |
| B2 | 600–800 | 450–600 |
| C1 | 800–1,000 | 600–750 |
| C2 | 1,000+ | 750+ |
At about ten hours a week, reaching B1 from zero takes roughly six months to a year. Studying a little every day beats long weekend sessions, because vocabulary needs repetition to stick.
Three example budgets
These use Klarweg prices and the listed Goethe exam fees. Add your own costs for books or extra speaking practice.
| Goal | Learning | Exam | Total |
|---|---|---|---|
| A1 certificate (for example, a spouse visa) | A1 course ₹1,999 | A1 ₹9,400 | ₹11,399 |
| B1 certificate (for example, Ausbildung) | Lifetime ₹4,999 | B1 ₹18,800 | ₹23,799 |
| B2 certificate | Lifetime ₹4,999 | B2 ₹21,200 | ₹26,199 |
For the B1 and B2 goals, Lifetime (₹4,999, every level) costs less than buying A1, A2 and B1 separately (₹8,997). Not every visa or job needs every certificate in between; check what your goal requires (Ausbildung · study).
What you can do for free
- Klarweg's free grammar guides and full syllabus, and Chapter 1 of every level.
- The Goethe-Institut's free official practice sets, linked in our A1 and B1 exam guides.
- Free courses and audio from public broadcasters such as Deutsche Welle.
Free material can take you a long way. What usually costs learners more is not having a clear order to follow, and stopping halfway.
Questions
Is there a monthly fee for Klarweg?
No. Each level is a one-time payment for two years of access; Lifetime is one payment for every level, with no expiry.
Do I need to buy all levels at once?
No. You can start with one level and upgrade later. If you already know your goal is B1 or higher, Lifetime is usually the lower total.
Can I learn German for free?
You can get far with free resources. Most learners who need a certificate by a deadline benefit from a structured course, because it removes the guesswork about what to learn next.
Try before you pay anything
Chapter 1 of each level is the complete Klarweg experience, not a teaser: colour-coded grammar, clickable words with audio, reading, listening and a quiz. No signup needed.
