sowohl … als auch, weder … noch, entweder … oder: German two-part connectors.

"Both … and", "neither … nor", "either … or", "not only … but also": these pairs make your German sound organised, and examiners at B1 and B2 notice them. Each pair has a fixed second half and one or two traps. Hindi has the same pairs: न … न, या तो … या, न सिर्फ़ … बल्कि.

In 30 seconds

  • sowohl … als auch = both … and
  • weder … noch = neither … nor (no extra nicht or kein)
  • entweder … oder = either … or
  • nicht nur … sondern auch = not only … but also; zwar … aber = admittedly … but
  • verb
  • subject

The five pairs

Two-part connectors
PairMeaningExample
sowohl … als auchboth … andIch spreche sowohl Hindi als auch Tamil.
weder … nochneither … norEr trinkt weder Kaffee noch Tee.
entweder … odereither … orWir fahren entweder heute oder morgen.
nicht nur … sondern auchnot only … but alsoSie spricht nicht nur Deutsch, sondern auch Französisch.
zwar … aberadmittedly … butDie Wohnung ist zwar klein, aber günstig.

Most often, these pairs link two words or phrases inside one clause. The first part goes directly before the first item, the second part before the second.

sowohl … als auch

  • Der Kurs ist sowohl für Studenten als auch für Berufstätige. The course is for both students and working people.
  • Sowohl meine Schwester als auch mein Bruder wohnen in Bangalore. Two subjects: the verb is usually plural.

It is a stronger, more formal und. In conversation, und or … und auch … is more common.

weder … noch

weder … noch is already negative. Do not add nicht or kein (see the nicht and kein guide):

  • Ich habe weder Zeit noch Geld.I have neither time nor money.
  • Das Hotel war weder sauber noch ruhig.

When noch starts a second full clause, the verb comes right after it: Er hat nicht angerufen, noch hat er geschrieben. This is formal; in speech people say … und auch nicht geschrieben.

entweder … oder

  • Ich nehme entweder den Bus oder die U-Bahn.
  • Entweder lernst du jetzt, oder du gehst mit uns ins Kino.Joining two clauses: entweder can take position 1, so the verb follows. oder does not count as a position.
  • Entweder du lernst jetzt, oder …Also correct, and common in speech: entweder outside the clause.

nicht nur … sondern auch

The second half is sondern auch, never aber auch in standard German. Put nicht nur right before the first thing you are stressing:

  • Deutsch ist nicht nur für die Arbeit nützlich, sondern auch für das Studium.
  • Sie hat die Prüfung nicht nur bestanden, sondern auch sehr gut abgeschnitten.

zwar … aber

Use it to admit one point and then put a stronger point against it. zwar usually stands in the middle of the first clause, and aber starts the second:

  • Das Zimmer ist zwar teuer, aber es liegt zentral.
  • Ich habe zwar wenig Zeit, aber ich helfe dir gern.

It is ideal for weighing pros and cons in the Goethe B1 and B2 writing tasks (see the B1 Schreiben guide). A related pair, je … desto, is in the comparatives guide.

Commas

Always a comma before sondern and aber. No comma before als auch, noch or oder when they join single words or phrases: sowohl Tee als auch Kaffee, entweder heute oder morgen. When entweder … oder joins two full clauses, a comma before oder is usual.
