The German imperative — Komm! Kommen Sie! Kommt!, made clear.

Requests, instructions and directions all use the imperative: Kommen Sie bitte herein. Geh geradeaus. Macht das Fenster zu. German has three forms, one for each way of addressing people, and Hindi speakers already know the logic from आइए, आओ, आ.

In 30 seconds

  • Sie-form (polite): verb + Sie: Kommen Sie!
  • du-form: the du-stem without -st: du kommst → Komm!
  • ihr-form: the normal ihr-form without the pronoun: Kommt!
  • The verb comes first; separable prefixes go to the end: Ruf mich an!
  • verb parts
  • Sie

आइए, आओ, आ — you already know this

Hindi has a different command form for each level of respect: आइए (respectful), आओ (familiar), आ (very informal). German works the same way, but its levels follow who you are speaking to:

The three forms

How to build each form
VerbSieduihr
kommenKommen Sie!Komm!Kommt!
machenMachen Sie!Mach!Macht!
wartenWarten Sie!Warte!Wartet!
nehmenNehmen Sie!Nimm!Nehmt!
sprechenSprechen Sie!Sprich!Sprecht!
  • Sie: the infinitive + Sie. Always include Sie.
  • du: take du kommst, drop du and -st: Komm! No pronoun.
  • ihr: take ihr kommt, drop ihr: Kommt!

Special du-forms

  • Verbs whose e changes to i/ie keep the change: nehmen → Nimm!, sprechen → Sprich!, lesen → Lies!, geben → Gib!
  • Verbs whose a becomes ä do not: fahren (du fährst) → Fahr!, schlafen → Schlaf!
  • Stems in -t, -d and some others add -e: Warte! Antworte! In careful writing you may also see Komme!, but speech drops the -e.

Separable verbs and sein

  • Ruf mich morgen an!The prefix goes to the end (see separable verbs).
  • Machen Sie bitte das Fenster zu.
  • Sei ruhig! Seid pünktlich! Seien Sie vorsichtig!sein is irregular: sei, seid, seien Sie.

Making it polite

A bare imperative can sound sharp. Soften it with bitte, mal or doch, or switch to a question with the Konjunktiv II (see the Konjunktiv II guide):

  • Warten Sie bitte einen Moment.Polite instruction.
  • Komm doch mal vorbei!Friendly invitation: "Do drop by!"
  • Könnten Sie bitte warten? Most polite: a question instead of a command.

Instructions in signs and recipes often use the infinitive at the end instead: Bitte nicht rauchen. Zwiebeln klein schneiden.
