Privacy Policy

1. Who we are

Klarweg is a German-language education brand offering self-paced online courses (levels A1 through C2, aligned to the Goethe-Zertifikat exam levels) and teacher-led live German classes and consultations. Klarweg is operated by an individual, not a registered company, LLP, or other corporate entity. There is currently no separate publicly listed business address; all correspondence is handled by email at klarwegofficial@gmail.com.

This policy explains what information Klarweg collects when you use the site, why it's collected, and what choices you have.

2. Data we collect and why

The table below reflects exactly what the Klarweg systems store today, what they will store for live classes and consultations once online booking and enrolment open, and what reaches us by email when you join a live-course waitlist.

Name	To personalise your account and greet you correctly.
Email address	To identify your account, let you sign in, and reach you about your purchases or support requests.
Phone number	Required by our payment processor, Cashfree, to create an order — collected when you begin a self-paced purchase or, once they open, an online consultation booking or live-course payment. You may also choose to include a WhatsApp or phone number in a waitlist request so we can reach you about it.
Google account identifier	If you choose "Sign in with Google," Google shares a verified email, name, and a stable account identifier with us so we can create or recognise your account. See Signing in with Google.
Password (as a salted hash)	If you sign up with email and password, we store a cryptographic hash of your password — never the password itself — to verify future logins.
Saved words and review progress	The German vocabulary you choose to save while learning, and your spaced-repetition review history for those words, so they follow your account across devices.
Purchases and course access (entitlements)	To know which levels or the Lifetime bundle you've purchased and unlock the matching content.
Order and payment identifiers	Records of each order (amount, status, Cashfree's own order/payment reference) so we can look up a purchase if you contact support. We do not store your card or UPI details — see Payments.
Live-course waitlist requests	If you join the free waitlist from the Live Classes page, your own email app sends us the details you entered: your name, email address, optional WhatsApp or phone number, current level, main goal, preferred teacher and course, preferred times and your message. We use them only to answer your request and tell you when a suitable course opens. The page itself does not send or store anything: the request reaches us only if you send the email, and it is kept in our email inbox, which is hosted by Google (Gmail), not on Klarweg's servers.
Consultation bookings and live-course enrolments	Once online booking and enrolment open: the teacher and time you book, or the course and batch you enrol in, a booking or enrolment reference, the amount, any consultation fee adjusted against a course fee, the status, and Cashfree's own order and payment references. We use them to confirm your booking or place, show it to you when you sign in, and handle cancellations and refunds. We never receive your UPI PIN, card details or banking password.
Pseudonymous rate-limit information	To slow down automated abuse of login and signup, we temporarily store a one-way cryptographic hash derived from your IP address and the current date — never the IP address itself in readable form.

Chapter progress (which sections you've completed, quiz scores) is stored only in your browser's local storage on your current device — it is not sent to or stored on Klarweg's servers, and does not follow you to another device.

3. Signing in with Google

If you choose "Sign in with Google," Google handles the authentication and, with your consent at that time, shares your verified email address, name, and a stable Google account identifier with Klarweg. We use this only to create or recognise your Klarweg account — we do not receive your Google password, and we do not access other Google account data such as your contacts, files, or the content of your Google account.

4. Payments (Cashfree)

Self-paced course purchases, and — once online booking and enrolment open — consultation and live-course payments, are processed by Cashfree, a third-party payment gateway. When you check out, your name, email, and phone number are shared with Cashfree to create the payment order. Your card, UPI, or other payment instrument details are entered directly with Cashfree — Klarweg's own systems never receive or store them. Klarweg stores only the resulting order record: the amount, currency, order status, and Cashfree's own order/payment reference identifiers.

Course access is granted automatically once Cashfree confirms a successful payment to our systems.

A consultation booking or a place in a live course is confirmed only once Cashfree confirms a successful payment to our systems. Paying for a consultation or a live course never grants access to the self-paced courses. See section 4A.

4A. Live classes and consultations

• Waitlist requests by email. To join a live-course waitlist, the Live Classes page prepares a request in your own email app, addressed to klarwegofficial@gmail.com. It does not submit a form, save the details in your browser or send them to Klarweg's servers. Nothing reaches us unless you press Send in your email app. What the request contains is listed in section 2.
• Who sees it. Live classes and consultations are taught by Klarweg's owner, who reads and answers the requests. If you include a WhatsApp number, we may contact you about your request on WhatsApp.
• Classes on Google Meet. Consultations and live classes take place on Google Meet, which processes your name, voice and video as part of the call under Google's own privacy policy. Classes and consultations are not recorded.
• Group classes. In a group class, the other learners in your batch can see your name and see and hear you when your camera and microphone are on. Please don't record or share them.
• Bookings and payments. Consultations are booked, and consultation and live-course fees are paid, online on the Live Classes page through Cashfree, never by email, manual UPI or bank transfer. Online booking and enrolment are not open yet; until they open, Klarweg takes no live-class or consultation payments. Your joining link is shown only to you, when you are signed in, once your booking is confirmed.

5. Cookies and local storage

Klarweg uses a single cookie, set when you log in: a session cookie that keeps you signed in. It is marked HttpOnly (not readable by page scripts) and Secure, so it is only ever sent over HTTPS. It is also marked SameSite=None, which is required because the site and the API are served from different domains — without it, your signed-in requests to the API wouldn't be authenticated. It carries no personal information itself — it is a reference our server uses to look up your logged-in session. We do not use cookies for advertising or cross-site tracking.

Separately, your browser's own local storage and IndexedDB are used for convenience and performance, entirely on your device:

• A small local profile object and your current chapter progress (both device-local, not synced to our servers).
• A visual-preference setting on the homepage (not personal data).
• Cached audio clips, so words you've already heard play back instantly without re-downloading.

None of this browser-local data is transmitted to Klarweg's servers; it stays on your device and can be cleared at any time through your browser's own settings.

6. Saved Words and account data

Saved Words and your review progress are tied to your account and stored on our servers, so they're available whenever you sign in — on any device. Only you can see your own saved words; each request is authenticated against your session and scoped to your account. You can remove an individual saved word at any time from the Saved Words page.

7. No analytics or advertising tracking

Klarweg does not currently use any analytics, advertising, or behavioural-tracking service. No third-party analytics script runs on the site as of this policy's last update.

8. Third-party services we use

Klarweg is built on the following third-party infrastructure, each of which processes some data as part of providing their service to us:

• Google — sign-in (see above) and web fonts; Gmail, which holds live-course waitlist requests and our email replies; and Google Meet, which hosts live classes and consultations.
• WhatsApp — only if you give us a WhatsApp number and we contact you there about your request.
• Cashfree — payment processing for self-paced purchases and, once online booking and enrolment open, consultations and live courses (see above).
• Cloudflare — our backend application and database run on Cloudflare Workers and D1, which process account, order, booking, enrolment and saved-words data on our behalf.
• GitHub Pages — hosts the Klarweg website itself.
• jsDelivr and GitHub Pages (as a CDN) — deliver course audio clips.
• OpenAI — generates Klarweg AI feedback (see Klarweg AI feedback below).

We have chosen these providers for their security and reliability. We have not independently verified, and do not make claims about, each provider's specific internal compliance certifications beyond what they publish themselves.

Klarweg AI feedback

Klarweg AI gives feedback on German you write or say inside a chapter (for example "Check my German" in Writing, or a hint on an exercise), and answers German-learning questions you ask in the Klarweg AI chat on the homepage. It runs only when you press one of those buttons or send a question. When it is not available, the course works as normal.

• What is sent: the text you submitted (for speaking, the transcript your browser's speech recognition produced — never the audio recording), and which chapter and exercise it belongs to. For the chat, your question and the last few messages of the same conversation are sent, so the answer can follow on; the conversation is not saved in your browser or on our servers. Your name, email address, phone number and account identifier are not sent to the AI model provider.
• Who processes it: the request passes through Klarweg's own server on Cloudflare, which then sends it to our AI model provider, OpenAI, to generate the feedback on our behalf.
• What we keep: Klarweg does not store the text you submit or the feedback returned. To enforce fair-use limits we store only counts: how many AI requests your account made per day and per month, and service-wide totals of requests and usage.
• Limits: Klarweg AI has daily and monthly limits per account, and a small preview allowance on Chapter 1 of each level.
• Accuracy: AI feedback can be wrong. The chapter's own explanations and answer keys are the authoritative version.

9. How long we keep data

We retain your account data for as long as your account is active. Where you ask us to delete your data, we will honour that request where possible, while retaining information we need to keep for legal, accounting, security, fraud-prevention, or dispute-resolution purposes.

Waitlist requests, and the emails about them, are kept for 12 months after our last contact with you, then deleted from our inbox by hand. This is a manual practice, not an automatic process. You can ask us to delete them earlier. Records of live-class and consultation payments are kept for as long as we need them for accounting and tax purposes.

10. Your choices — access, correction, deletion

To ask what data we hold about you, to correct it, or to request deletion, email klarwegofficial@gmail.com from the address on your account.

You can remove individual saved words yourself at any time from the Saved Words page, without contacting support.

11. Children and minors

Klarweg does not currently enforce a minimum age for account creation. If you are a parent or guardian and believe a minor in your care has created an account or provided personal information without your consent, contact us at klarwegofficial@gmail.com and we will address it. We do not knowingly target advertising at children, and — as noted above — we do not run advertising or tracking of any kind.

No minimum age has been set for live classes or consultations. They are video calls, and in a group class other learners can see and hear you. If a course has an age requirement, it is stated in the written course terms before you pay.

12. Changes to this policy

We may update this policy as Klarweg's features change. We'll update the "last updated" date above when we do. Continued use of Klarweg after a change means you accept the updated policy.
