man: people in general
man means people in general, or "you" in the general sense. It takes the same verb form as er, and it is everywhere in rules, instructions and signs:
- In Deutschland trennt man den Müll.In Germany, people separate their rubbish.
- Hier darf man nicht rauchen. You may not smoke here.
- Wie schreibt man Ihren Namen? How do you spell your name?
Three rules: man is written in lower case with one n (der Mann is "the man"); it is repeated, not replaced by er (Wenn man müde ist, sollte man schlafen.); and its object forms are einen and einem: Das macht einem Angst. The reflexive is sich: Man freut sich.
jemand and niemand
In the Nominativ they have no ending. In the Akkusativ and Dativ, an ending is optional; in careful writing, -en and -em are common:
- Jemand klopft an die Tür.
- Ich habe niemand(en) gesehen.Akkusativ: both forms are correct.
- Hast du das jemand(em) erzählt?Dativ: both forms are correct.
For "anyone at all", German adds irgend-: irgendjemand, and likewise irgendwo (somewhere), irgendwann (at some point).
etwas and nichts
etwas and nichts never change. In speech, etwas is often shortened to was: Hast du was gesagt?
- Ich muss dir etwas sagen.
- Er hat heute nichts gegessen.
With an adjective, the adjective becomes a capitalised noun ending in -es: etwas Gutes (something good), nichts Neues (nothing new), viel Interessantes.
alle, jeder, alles
- Alle sind pünktlich.Everyone (all of them): plural verb.
- Jeder bekommt ein Zertifikat.Everyone (each one): singular verb.
- Alles ist fertig.Everything: singular verb.
jeder takes the endings of der: jeden Tag, mit jedem Kollegen, jede Woche.
einer, keiner, eins
To say "one" or "none" without repeating a noun, use ein- or kein- with the ending of der / die / das:
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Hast du einen Stift? (der) | Ja, ich habe einen. / Nein, ich habe keinen. |
| Hast du eine Tasche? (die) | Ja, ich habe eine. / Nein, ich habe keine. |
| Hast du ein Auto? (das) | Ja, ich habe eins. / Nein, ich habe keins. |
Neuter is the one to watch: not ein but eins (also written eines). As subject: Einer von uns muss gehen. Keiner hat Zeit.
Hindi कोई, कुछ, सब
| Hindi | German |
|---|---|
| कोई आया था। | Jemand ist gekommen. |
| कोई नहीं आया। | Niemand ist gekommen. |
| मैंने कुछ नहीं खरीदा। | Ich habe nichts gekauft. |
| यहाँ सिगरेट पीना मना है। | Hier darf man nicht rauchen. |
The trap is in rows 2 and 3. Hindi builds "no one" and "nothing" from two words, कोई + नहीं and कुछ + नहीं. German uses one word: niemand, nichts. Adding nicht as well turns it into a double negative. And where Hindi uses an impersonal phrase or लोग (लोग कहते हैं), German simply uses man (man sagt).
Common mistakes
- Not Ich habe nicht nichts gekauft. But Ich habe nichts gekauft.कुछ नहीं = nichts, one word.
- Not Niemand hat nichts gesagt. But Niemand hat etwas gesagt. One negative word per statement.
- Not Wenn man Hunger hat, isst er etwas. But Wenn man Hunger hat, isst man etwas.man is repeated, not replaced by er.
- Not Alle ist da.But Alle sind da.alle is plural.
- Not Hast du ein Handy? — Ja, ich habe ein.But Ja, ich habe eins.Standing alone, neuter ein becomes eins.
- Not Ich wünsche dir etwas gutes. But Ich wünsche dir etwas Gutes. After etwas, the adjective is a noun: capital letter.
