Telling the time in German — halb drei is not 3:30, made clear.

Times come up everywhere: appointments, trains, the A1 listening exam. German has a formal 24-hour way and an everyday way with Viertel and halb. The everyday way contains one famous trap, and Hindi speakers have a built-in advantage for spotting it: पौने चार already works like German.

In 30 seconds

  • Ask: Wie spät ist es? or Wie viel Uhr ist es? Answer: Es ist …
  • Formal (timetables, offices): 14:30 = vierzehn Uhr dreißig.
  • Everyday: Viertel nach (quarter past), Viertel vor (quarter to), and halb + the next hour: halb drei = 2:30.
  • "At" a time is um: um acht Uhr.

The formal way: 24 hours

Train timetables, opening hours, appointments by letter and announcements use the 24-hour clock. Say the hour, then Uhr, then the minutes:

  • 7:15 — sieben Uhr fünfzehn
  • 14:30 — vierzehn Uhr dreißig
  • 20:45 — zwanzig Uhr fünfundvierzig
  • 9:00 — neun UhrFull hours: no minutes.

Written German uses a colon or a full stop: 14:30 Uhr or 14.30 Uhr.

The everyday way

Everyday times around 2 o'clock
TimeGermanLiterally
2:00zwei (Uhr)two
2:05fünf nach zweifive after two
2:15Viertel nach zweiquarter after two
2:20zwanzig nach zweitwenty after two
2:25fünf vor halb dreifive before half (to) three
2:30halb dreihalf (to) three
2:35fünf nach halb dreifive after half (to) three
2:45Viertel vor dreiquarter before three
2:50zehn vor dreiten before three

The key: halb looks forward to the coming hour. halb drei means "half of the way to three", which is 2:30. Some regions also say viertel drei (2:15) or dreiviertel drei (2:45); you will hear these, but Viertel nach and Viertel vor are understood everywhere.

Hindi already counts like this

English speakers struggle with halb drei. Hindi speakers have an advantage, because Hindi also has times that look forward to the next hour:

3:15सवा तीनViertel nach drei
3:30साढ़े तीनhalb vier ← trap
3:45पौने चारViertel vor vier
1:30डेढ़halb zwei
2:30ढाईhalb drei

Think of halb like पौने: both name the coming hour. The danger is साढ़े तीन, which names the hour just passed. Translating it word for word gives halb drei, which is an hour too early.
