Dates in German: days, months, am fünften Mai, and how to write them.

Saying a date in German needs three small things: the right preposition (am, im or nothing), an ordinal number, and the right ending on it. This guide covers the days, months and seasons, am fünften Mai vs der fünfte Mai, birthdays, and how to write the date in a letter. Good news from India: Germany writes day, month, year, just like you.

In 30 seconds

  • am + day or date: am Montag, am 5. Mai.
  • im + month or season: im Mai, im Sommer. Years: no preposition, or im Jahr.
  • Written: 5.5.2026 or 5. Mai 2026: the dot after the number means "-th".
  • time
  • verb

Days, months and seasons

All days, months and seasons are masculine (der), which is why they take am and im.

In parts of Germany you will also hear Sonnabend for Saturday, and in Austria Jänner for January. Add -s to a day for "every": montags = on Mondays (lower case).

am, im, um: which preposition?

Time prepositions
UseWithExample
amdays, dates, parts of the dayam Freitag, am 3. Juni, am Abend
immonths, seasonsim Oktober, im Winter
umclock timesum 9 Uhr

One exception among parts of the day: in der Nacht (at night). For clock times, see the telling the time guide.

Or im Jahr 1998. Not in 1998.

The date: ordinal numbers

Dates use ordinal numbers ("fifth", not "five"). They are built from the normal number + -t up to 19 and + -st from 20, with an ending after it (see the numbers guide). Learn the four irregular ones:

Ordinals in dates (with am … -en)
DateSay
1.am ersten (irregular)
2.am zweiten
3.am dritten (irregular)
7.am siebten (irregular)
8.am achten (only one t)
12.am zwölften
19.am neunzehnten
20.am zwanzigsten (-st- from 20)
31.am einunddreißigsten

der fünfte or am fünften?

The ending depends on what comes before the number:

  • Heute ist der fünfte Mai.After der (Nominativ): -e.
  • Ich komme am fünften Mai.After am (Dativ): -en.
  • Heute haben wir den fünften Mai.After den (Akkusativ): -en.

To ask the date: Der Wievielte ist heute? (answer der fünfte) or Welches Datum ist heute? To ask when: Wann …? or Am Wievielten …? (answer am fünften).

Writing the date

German writes day, month, year, the same order as in India. A dot after a number means it is an ordinal:

  • 05.11.2026 or 5.11.2026Numeric, with dots (not slashes).
  • 5. November 2026Read: der fünfte November zweitausendsechsundzwanzig.
  • Pune, 5. November 2026Top right of a letter. You will also see the older form Pune, den 5. November 2026.

The date line matters in the Goethe A1 and A2 writing tasks; see the Goethe A1 exam guide.

Birthdays and ranges

  • Wann hast du Geburtstag? — Am dritten April.
  • Ich habe im April Geburtstag.Only the month: im.

Hindi को and तारीख

Dates in both languages
HindiGerman
Ich komme am fünften Mai.
Der Wievielte ist heute?
Ich habe im April Geburtstag.

Hindi को after a date matches German am, and में after a month matches im. The difference: Hindi says the plain number (पाँच), German needs the ordinal (fünften, "fifth").
